uMngeni ( English uMngeni Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of uMgungundlovu in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the parish is in the town of Howick . Mbali Myeni is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.

The community is named after the Mngeni River . The isiZulu term uMngeni stands for 'place of acacias'. The parish covers an area of ​​1566 square kilometers.

uMngeni is located in the center of the district and borders the following communities: Mpofana to the north and uMshwathi to the northeast . To the south, Msunduzi and Impendle border on uMngeni. In the west the municipality has short border sections with the former District Management Areas Mkhomazi Wilderness Area and Highmoor / Kamberg Park .

In 2011 the community had 92,710 inhabitants. Of these, 75% were black, 19.4% white, 3.8% Indian or Asian and 1.5% colored .

The first language was 61.9% isiZulu , 24.5% English, 3.6% Sesotho , 2% Afrikaans , 1.4% isiXhosa and 0.8% isiNdebele .

economy

The most important economic pillars in the municipality are agriculture and tourism. Forestry is practiced in uMngeni. Many dairy products are made and vegetables are also grown.

Tourism plays an important role. A variety of water sports are available at the Midmar Dam and Albert Falls Dam reservoirs. The area is good for walking, cycling and horse riding. The municipality is located in the catchment area of ​​the Midlands Meander holiday route .
