Mkhambathini ( English Mkhambathini Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of uMgungundlovu in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The municipality's administrative headquarters are in Camperdown . Thobekile Maphumulo is the mayor. The parish was named after the Mkhambathini Table Mountain . The name of the mountain is derived from the isiZulu term eMkhambathini for 'place of acacias '. In 2011 the community had 63,142 inhabitants. It covers an area of 891 square kilometers.
geography
Mkhambathini is the second smallest parish in the district. It is located in the southeast of uMgungundlovu. To the west, Mkhambathini is bordered by Richmond and Msunduzi , to the north by uMshwathi and to the east by eThekwini . The only city is Camperdown. More than half of the municipal area consists of natural forest , overgrown with bushes or scrubland.
population
In 2011 the community had 63,142 inhabitants. 94.8% of them were black, 3.7% white and 1% Indian or Asian .
The first language was 83.7% isiZulu , 5.1% isiXhosa , 4.9% English, 1.8% Sesotho , 0.9% Afrikaans and 0.8% isiNdebele .
economy
Mkhambathini is the fastest growing parish in the district economically and demographically. The proximity to Pietermaritzburg and Durban brings the community many strategic advantages. However, the high level of illiteracy and the resulting unemployment is an economic disadvantage.
Agriculture
The structure of agriculture in Mkhambathini goes back to the apartheid period . Commercial agriculture is therefore only practiced in the well-developed center of the municipality. The rural areas and especially areas managed by the Ingonyama Trust are excluded . Mkhambathini mainly grows sugar cane and raises poultry.
manufacturing industry
The manufacturing industry has almost exclusively settled around Camperdown and Eston - because of the local sugar factory Eston Sugar Mill . However, mainly the agricultural products of the municipality, sugar and poultry meat, are further processed. The main companies are Rainbow Chickens and Illovo Sugar .
tourism
The tourism industry in Mkhambithi has two pillars: the eco and rural tourism . Here, too, the problem is that most farms concentrate on the center, while the potential of the rural areas is not used. The establishment of the Mkhambathini Game Reserve has been planned since 2008 . The nature park is to be 110 square kilometers. The proposed area is between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, northeast of the N3 national road .
