Mpofana (English Mpofana Local Municipality , formerly Mooi Mpofana ) is a municipality in the South African district of uMgungundlovu in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The municipality's administrative headquarters are in Mooi River . Thembi Maureen Magubane is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.

In 2011 the community had 38,103 inhabitants. It covers an area of ​​1652 square kilometers.

Mpofana is bordered by Inkosi Langalibalele and Msinga parishes to the north, Umvoti and uMshwathi to the east and uMngeni to the south . West of Mpofana is the former District Management Area Highmoor / Kamberg Park and also the municipality of Inkosi Langalibalele.

In 2011 the community had 38,103 inhabitants. 92.2% of them were black, 5.2% white, 1.8% Indian or Asian and 0.6% colored .

The first language was 85.3% isiZulu , 6.9% English, 1.1% isiNdebele and 0.9% Afrikaans .

economy

Mpofana is strategically located within KwaZulu-Natal. The municipality is well connected to the north and south via the N3 and a railway line from Durban to Gauteng . The road network has also been expanded within the municipality, making tourism easier, especially in the Drakensberg .

Up until the 1990s there was a textile industry in Mpofana, which, however, emigrated due to poor infrastructural conditions. This also led to a slump in the community's population. This branch of industry was an important economic factor.

The Mooi River area is known for its dairy farming, dairy products and horse breeding. Potatoes and cash crops are also grown.

The stimulating climate is an important factor in Mpofana's tourism and attracts many holidaymakers to the coast and the Highveld . The main attractions are the Kamberg Nature Reserve and the Zulu Falls . The Mooi River and Rosetta are on the Midlands Meander Holiday Route .

  • The Weston Agricultural Museum is a local history museum that exhibits photographs and documents of local history.
  • The Rhode House Museum is another local museum. The house belonged to Edgar Rhode, a prominent citizen of the parish who sat on the first city council in 1921.
