uMshwathi (also uMshwati , English uMshwathi Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of uMgungundlovu in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the municipality is Wartburg . Marshal Gwala is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.

The name of the parish comes from the uMshwati River that flows through the parish. The parish covers an area of ​​1818 square kilometers.

geography

uMshwathi is located in the center of KwaZulu-Natal. The municipality borders in the north on Umvoti , in the east on Ndwedwe and in the south on eThekwini , Mkhambathini and Msunduzi . To the west of uMshwathi is uMngeni and northwest of Mpofana .

There are two reservoirs in uMshwathi, Albert Falls Dam and Nagle Dam .

history

uMshwathi has a strong German heritage that can be recognized by many place names. In the middle of the 19th century, farmers, missionaries and other settlers came from Germany to settle here. Places with German names are for example Harburg , Kirchdorf, New Hanover, Lillienthal , Schroeders and Hermannsburg . The namesake of the main town of the community is the German Wartburg , where Martin Luther translated the Bible into German.

In 2011 the community had 106,374 inhabitants. Of these, 95.1% were black, 2.7% white and 1.7% Indian or Asian .

The first language was 89% isiZulu , 4.8% English, 1% isiNdebele and 0.9% isiXhosa .

economy

uMshwati is centrally located and has good transport links via the N2 and N3 . In addition, the community is only 30 kilometers from Pietermaritzburg , the capital of KwaZulu-Natal.
