New Hanover is a place in the Midlands of the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is located in the uMshwathi parish in the uMgungundlovu district . It lies at an altitude of 717 meters above sea level and in 2011 had 3,175 inhabitants. New Hanover was founded in 1850 by German cotton growers from the Hanover area . Today sugar cane cultivation , grain cultivation and forestry dominate . New Hanover is about 30 kilometers northeast of Pietermaritzburg .
