uMgungundlovu (also Umgungundlovu ) is a district in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa . It has 1,017,763 inhabitants (as of October 2011) on a total area of 9,513 km². The seat of the district administration is Pietermaritzburg .
The name of the district is the isiZulu term for place for the (large) elephants .
