uMkhanyakude , also Umkhanyakude , is a district within the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa . It has 625,846 inhabitants (as of October 2011) on a total area of ​​12,821 km². The district administration is located in Mkuze .

uMkhanyakude is an isiZulu word meaning "shining far and wide." The district was named after the umkhanyakude tree ( yellow-bark acacia ) that is native there. These trees grow very tall and can be seen from a great distance due to their light color.
