Impendle ( English Impendle Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of uMgungundlovu in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative center of the municipality is in the town of Impendle . The ANC has the majority in the local council.

The name of the community comes from a war between the Griqua and the farmers in the 18th century. The Griqua were accused of stealing cattle and the farmers attacked them to protect their property. The conflict was called impi-endle , the isiZulu term for 'war in the wild'. The parish covers an area of 949 square kilometers.

geography

Impendle is a rural community at the foot of the Drakensberg . The topography is very different. The landscape in the eastern part of the municipality is hilly and used for agriculture. The central area is in higher mountains, which means that there are only settlements along roads and rivers. The further west, the less populated the landscape. The mountainous region is considered to be the reservoir for KwaZulu-Natal. The south lies in the catchment area of the Mkhomazi River and the northeast in that of the Mngeni River .

Impendle borders on the municipality of uMngeni to the north and Msunduzi to the east . South of Impendle is the Alfred Duma community and to the west is the former District Management Area Mkhomazi Wilderness Area . The major locations in the parish are Boston , Impendle, and Lower Loteni .

population

In 2011 the community had 33,105 inhabitants. Of these, 98.9% were black and 0.5% white.

The first language was 93.3% isiZulu , 1.8% English, 1.6% Sesotho and 1.2% isiNdebele .

economy

The economic activities within the municipality are limited to tourism and agriculture and forestry. Since the middle of the 19th century, livestock has been raised for milk production. In addition, maize and other grains and vegetables are grown.

In contrast to many other small towns in South Africa, the town of Impendle did not develop as a service center for the surrounding farms. The city served as the administrative seat of the Impendle magisterial district . As a result, the city is not well developed as the municipality's economic and trade center.

The location at the foot of the Drakensberg with the hilly landscape and nature reserves offer the community great potential in the tourism industry.

Attractions

  • The Impendle Nature Reserve is a nature reserve that is home to rare and critically endangered species. Therefore the park is only accessible with a special permit.
