Wartburg is a place in the Midlands of the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is located in the uMshwathi parish in the uMgungundlovu district .

Wartburg was founded in the middle of the 19th century by German settlers from the Hanover area . In 2011 the place had 906 inhabitants. The majority of them are descendants of the immigrants and some of them still speak German. The two Lutheran churches in the area were also built by the German settlers. The name of the place comes from the German Wartburg near Eisenach . Martin Luther translated the Bible there. The Luther rose can be seen in the coat of arms of Wartburg .

In the Wartburger Hof, a hotel and restaurant, German food and home-brewed beer are served. There is also the Wartburg Kirchdorf School , a school of German origin, in which German is still partly taught today.

In addition to tourism, agriculture is also important for the Wartburg economy. Mainly corn , sugar cane , industrial wood and kiwi are grown.

Wartburg is located about 30 kilometers northeast of Pietermaritzburg at an altitude of 881 meters above sea level.
