The Midmar Reservoir ( English Midmar Dam) is an artificially created reservoir in South Africa northwest of Pietermaritzburg on the Midmar Nature Reserve south of Howick . The surface of the lake is 15,643,000 m² with full damming. The barrier structure is 1432 m long and 23 m high. The facility is used for industry and agriculture as well as for recreational purposes.

Every year one of the world's largest open water races takes place on the lake , the Midmar Mile .
