Midmar Mile

The Midmar Mile is an open water swimming event that has been held every February since 1973 on the Midmar Reservoir north of Pietermaritzburg , KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa . In 2009 it got an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest open water swimming event with 13,755 participants that year.

The most frequent winner with 6 victories so far (2015) is the South African Chad Ho , 2015 world champion over 5 km. German men have twice entered the list of winners: In 1998, former world champion Jörg Hoffmann won and in 2009 the later open water world champion Christian Reichert ; In 2009, his future wife Nadine Pastor was second behind the record winner in the women, the English Keri-Anne Payne , silver medalist over 10 km in Beijing 2008 , with 7 successes. The fastest time in the men's race in 2006 was South African Troyden Prinsloo with 17:47 minutes .
