Howick Falls ( zulu kwaNogqaza , "the great" or "place of the great") is a waterfall on the Mngeni River near Howick in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is 119 meters high. The name comes from the city. This was named after the colonial minister in London , Earl Gray , who had recently been given the title of Lord Howick .

Howick Falls is one of the Midlands major tourist attractions . Access to the waterfall is easy. There is a lookout point with a rest area. There are several hiking trails in the area that run around the waterfall basin and along the Mngeni. After the waterfall, the Mngeni flows through a valley in which the Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve is located. In addition to over 250 different bird species, the nature park is also home to zebras, giraffes and various types of antelope.

Mythological meaning

For many Zulu , Howick Falls is a dangerous and magical place. Evil spirits and an Inkanyamba , a huge snake-like creature, are said to live in the pool . The Zulu come here to pray or offer sacrifices. Only the sangoma is allowed to approach the pool. All others should run the risk of being eaten by the Inkanyamba.
