Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on April 11, 1806 for General Sir Charles Gray . He was a successful military leader in the American War of Independence and the First Coalition War .
Along with the earliest title, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Howick , of Howick in the County of Northumberland. As early as June 23, 1801, he had been awarded the title of Baron Gray of Howick , of Howick in the County of Northumberland. Both titles also belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The title Viscount Howick is the courtesy title for each earl's eldest son.
The father of the 1st Earl, Henry Gray (1691-1749), High Sheriff of Northumberland, had on January 11, 1746 in the Baronetage of Great Britain the title of Baronet , of Howick in the County of Northumberland, was awarded. The title fell in 1749 to his eldest son Sir Henry Gray, 2nd Baronet (1722-1808) and, on his childless death in 1808, to his nephew, 2nd Earl Gray . The baronetcy has since also been a subordinate title of the respective earl.
