ICD-10 online (WHO version 2019)

A microcolon , from ancient Greek μικρός mikrós , German 'small, narrow' and ancient Greek κῶλον kōlon , German 'gut, sausage' , is an abnormally small, unfilled large intestine ( colon ), usually due to insufficient use. It is an indication of an intrauterine disturbed meconium passage into the large intestine and usually occurs in the case of (congenital) obstructions in the passage of the gastrointestinal tract.

causes

Common causes are:

As part of some syndromes , the microcolon can be an essential feature:

diagnosis

The diagnosis is made by a colonic enema . The colon is underdeveloped, as thick as a finger, thin-walled, shorter than normal and has hardly any flexures.

Differential diagnosis

The neonatal small left colon syndrome , consequences of necrotizing enterocolitis , meconium plug syndrome , functional microcolon in premature infants are to be distinguished.
