Milk collection point

Milk collection points (locally also Milchhäusl or Milchhäusle in southern Germany ) used to be collection points for farmers in a certain area, where they delivered their milk . From there it was collected and transported to the bulk buyer .

Most of the milk collection points were built in the 1930s. Before that, the milk was usually collected from the individual milk-supplying farms with horse-drawn vehicles. After the milk collection points had been set up, usually at a central location in the village, the milk was delivered there by the individual farmers. The buildings were used to collect and cool the milk until it was transported onward. The delivery conditions made the milk collection points a social meeting place in many places.

The importance of the milk collection points steadily decreased in the second half of the 20th century as a result of structural change and the ever decreasing milk production . Depending on the region, the buildings in Germany and Switzerland in the 1970s to 1990s became so unprofitable that their operation was gradually discontinued.

The remaining buildings, to this day mostly easily recognizable by their typical ramp with staircase, were often empty after their function as a milk collection point until they were either demolished or converted. Today they are often used for youth clubs, cultural meeting places or small bars.
