Milei

Milei - short for Mil ch egg white - was the name of a meal replacement product in powder form, which in the last years of World War II was sold in Germany.

Milei consisted of proteins from milk or whey that were precipitated , washed and dried. The product was used as an egg substitute for breading, thickening soups or baking cakes. A heaped tablespoon of the yellow powder, mixed with three tablespoons of water, was the standard amount to replace an egg or egg yolk. A special product was on the market under the name "Milei G". Alternatively, in addition to Milei, Syntova from Pomosinwerke in Frankfurt a. M. and milk protein snow from Edmes-GmbH in Berlin.

"Milei" was used to supply troops for the Wehrmacht , but also in private households affected by food shortages. In the latter, it remained common until the post-war years. The manufacturer was Milei-Gesellschaft mbH, based in Stuttgart . The company was re-established in 1972 with its headquarters in Leutkirch im Allgäu and continues to manufacture whey products, see MILEI .
