A variant of the original term was for the Byzantine silver coins called μιλιαρήσιον Miliaresion used from the 8th to 11th centuries. This coin, weighing between 2.0 and 2.8 g, was the Byzantine edition of the Islamic dirhem , which had been minted since the 7th century .
