Syrian civil war

The airfield has been besieged in the Syrian civil war since September 2012 by an Islamist alliance consisting of the jihadist-Salafist terrorist organization al-Nusra Front , the jihadist Jaish al-Fatah and the jihadist Islamic Turkestan Party . At the end of August 2015, it initially occupied the entrance area and finally conquered the entire airfield on September 9, 2015. After the capture, captured Syrian army soldiers were murdered on the airfield. 56 people were killed.

On January 9, 2018, the Syrian army and its allies, coming from the south, reached the airfield as part of an offensive. On January 20, 2018, the Syrian army regained control of the airport grounds.
