Seyring military airfield

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Seyring military airfield in Seyring near Gerasdorf near Vienna was the most important and largest German military airfield in the Vienna area during the Second World War . The airport's code name was "Wetterfrosch".

Flight units such as Jagdgeschwader 53 ("Pik-As") or Jagdgeschwader 301, which operated using the Wilde-Sau method , were stationed here . The airfield also served as an important incursion nest for German night fighters. Even at the time of the invasion of Normandy , hunters remained stationed here, while otherwise practically all units were relocated to France.

The Seyring military airfield was an extensive facility. Several hangars , a paved hall apron, accommodation, a sewage treatment plant and kilometer-long taxiways made it one of the largest German air bases at all. The airport was still being expanded in 1944 - it should now have a paved runway. It cannot be said with certainty whether this was still completed.

You can still see the remains of this airfield such as the taxiways, some military bunkers and the sewage treatment plant.
