The military settlement Caihong ( Chinese  彩虹 眷村 , Pinyin Cǎihóng Juàncūn , German: "Military settlement rainbow") is a former settlement for soldiers and today an art monument in the Taiwanese city of Taichung . The park-like facility is known for its colorfully painted buildings. The pictures on the walls of the buildings were painted by a former soldier of the Republic of China Armed Forces named Huang Yong-Fu, which is why this artist was called "Rainbow Grandpa" by many people. Many buildings next to the settlement were demolished. After a student protest against the demolition plan, the Taichung city government decided to leave the painted settlement as an art park. The members of the artist's family are currently the only residents of the area.

history

Caihong Military Settlement

After the defeat in the Chinese civil war , the powerless ruling party Kuomintang had to withdraw to Taiwan. The government built the settlement to offer their soldiers shelter.

The name "Caihong" comes from the colorful paintings on the walls of the settlement by the retired soldier Huang Yong-Fu. The walls are so colored that visitors associate them with the rainbow. In doing so, the painter turned the settlement into a tourist attraction. Despite the art, however, the old settlement was shabby and dilapidated in 2010. The city government made the decision to demolish the entire settlement. They offered the residents money to voluntarily leave the buildings. The plan was not implemented after a protest by students. The city government relented, and so the settlement could be saved as an art park.

In 2010 some of the paintings were destroyed by an unknown person and parts of the buildings were also damaged. Huang Yong-Fu was broken into and money was stolen. Another incident occurred in February 2011. Someone sprayed parts of the painting and wrote swear words on the walls.
