Mimos (research institute)

The Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS) is a research and development company of the Malaysian government. MIMOS specializes in information and communication technology ( ICT ) and microelectronics. The seat is in Kuala Lumpur (Technology Park Malaysia).

history

It was founded in January 1985 and was then a unit of the Prime Minister's office. In 1990 this was expanded and became a separate department of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. In 1994, MIMOS became the secretariat of the National IT Council (NITC) and played an important role in the development of the framework for the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC).

In 1996 the institute was renamed MIMOS Berhad . The areas of responsibility at that time included research and development , development of IT guidelines and economic development.

In 2003 the responsibility for IT guidelines was transferred to the Malaysian Ministry of Energy, Communication and Multimedia. Research and development has been the main task ever since. The existing business units are to be sold.
