Office of Health

The Liechtenstein State Hospital in Vaduz is the only public hospital in Liechtenstein.

The Office for Health (AG) is responsible for the hospital system and health policy. The State of Liechtenstein is responsible for hospital care, for health insurance and pharmaceuticals as well as for effective control and management of health costs.

In 2004 an office for health services was created, which in 2007 was expanded to become an office for health. Since then, all health care tasks have been concentrated at the Office for Health, whose workforce has doubled as a result of the reorganization. Due to its small size, Liechtenstein is dependent on cooperation in the medical and psychiatric fields. Contracts have been concluded with clinics in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. The health care system is largely financed by the state and statutory health and accident insurance . Health insurance has been compulsory since 1972. In addition to domestic health insurance companies, there are also Swiss health insurance companies operating in Liechtenstein.

Food Control and Veterinary Office

The Food Inspection and Veterinary Office (ALKVW) protects consumers from food that is hazardous to health and ensures food hygiene . It controls the drinking and bathing water and supervises the measuring system . In the veterinary field, it controls animal health, animal welfare , hygiene in milk and meat production, the trade in veterinary medicinal products and the dog sector.

Office for Social Services

The Office for Social Services (ASD) advises, looks after and supports clients. On a second official level, the office fulfills tasks ranging from youth protection to economic social assistance to guarantee the subsistence level to legal welfare procedures that can lead to the admission of mentally ill or seriously neglected people to suitable institutions. In 2005, the Office for Social Services looked after a total of 1390 clients, 53% of whom were Liechtenstein citizens and 28% EU or Swiss citizens.
