The Minsk Zubrs are a Belarusian American football team .

history

The Zubrs (German: Wisente) were founded in Minsk in 1991 . In 1992, 1993 and 1994 the team won the Championship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), in which, besides the Belarusians, two teams from Moscow and two teams from Ukraine (Donetsk and Kharkov) took part. In 1995 the team was runner-up in the CIS championship. In 1993 and 1994, the Zubrs went on a tour of the United States, where they played seven games against teams from the second NCAA division.

In 1995, the American Football Association of the Republic of Belarus (FAFRB) became a member of the European Federation EFAF . In 1996 the team qualified for the European Football League , but had to withdraw for economic reasons. Only after four years the club was able to put up a team again. The average age of the players at that time was 22 years, most of them were students of the Institute for Parliamentary and Entrepreneurship.

In the absence of competition in their own country, the team initially only played friendly matches against other Eastern European teams. Since the 2009 season, the Zubrs played for the Ukrainian championship. They were subject to the Uzhgorod Lumberjacks in the 2009 final and the Donetsk Scythians in the 2010 final . In the 2016 season, the Zubrs became the first foreign team to win the Ukrainian championship.
