Coin of Mithridates I. The Greek inscription reads "(Coin) of the great king Arsakes, friend of the Greeks". Like all Parthian kings, Mithridates also carried the throne name or title Arsakes .
Mithridates I ( Persian مهرداد Mit'radāta , also Arsakes VI. Euergetes , called Philhellenos ("friend of the Greeks"); * around 195 BC Chr .; † 132 BC BC) was from around 165 BC. Until his death King of the Parthians . He came from the Arsacid family and was the son of King Phriapatios . Mithradates expanded the Parthian Empire by conquering western Iran ( Media , Persis) and Mesopotamia from the Greek Seleucids and parts of the Greco-Bactrian Empire . 140/139 BC He defeated the Seleucid king Demetrios II on his campaign to recapture Iran. As a result of this victory, Mesopotamia came under direct Parthian rule and Demetrios II was taken prisoner.
