history

As part of the missionary work of the Swiss Capuchins in what was then Tanganyika , a primary school was built in Mitole in 1953. Between 1959 and 1966, Father Paulin Bigger expanded the school and organized the construction of accommodation for students and teachers, a hall for 160 students, the church and the rectory. At that time there were only a few Christians in Mitole and therefore only a limited need for pastoral activity. Paulin Bigger's successor, Alfeus Janssen, also looked after the 750 or so Catholics in the wider area, who mainly consisted of members of the Makonde people and government employees.
