history

Lindi in a map section from 1906 (the red G stands for gin station , a part of cotton

Lindi was founded in the 17th century when Arab-Zanzibarian traders used the place as a strategically favorable end point for their slave and ivory caravans from Lake Nasa (also Lake Malawi). The German colonialists moved the headquarters of the Lindi district here. From the formerly probably magnificent villas made of coral stone along the bay and from the district office, only ruins remain today. The once stately German boma at the front of the sea near the harbor is now overgrown by trees.

The region was an important growing area for sisal . At the time of German colonialism , Lindi was the capital of the southern region of German East Africa . The number of inhabitants was around 4,000. Lindi was the seat of the district office, had a main customs office and a post and telegraph company. In addition, Lindi was the station of the 3rd Company of the Protection Force for German East Africa . Shipping experienced an upswing after 1900. In 1908, for example, port traffic comprised 34 incoming ships on the German East-Africa Line . Lindi was then the main port of the southern parts of Tanzania until it was replaced by Mtwara in this role after 1950 . Coordinates: 10 ° 0 ′  S , 39 ° 43 ′  E

traffic

  • Port: The small port of Lindi is only of local importance.
  • Airport: Lindi Airport is managed by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority. There are no scheduled flights to Lindi.
  • Roads: The most important road connection is the continuously paved federal road to Dar es Salaam. The extension of the coastal road south to Mtwara is also paved and can be used all year round.

religion

According to estimates by the US Pew Research Center in 2010, around 35% of the Tanzanian population is Muslim, while 60% are Catholic. On Zanzibar and the islands as well as the coastal regions (Lindi), however, Islam is the dominant religion with more than 98%. In the coastal regions of East Africa and along old trade routes, where Arab traders traveled into the hinterland for centuries, Islam was consolidated. With the arrival of the Europeans, the imams faced competition from Christianity. However, the Christian communities soon withdrew to the hinterland, as the Muslim phalanx on the coast could not be broken.

Lindi is the seat of the diocese of Lindi .
