history

The Territorial Catholic Abbey of Ndanda had existed in the Mtwara area since 1934.

Until 1947 there was only an insignificant fishing village at the site of today's port. As part of the failed large-scale Tanganyika Groundnut Scheme project , the British colonial administration decided in February 1947 to use large parts of the hinterland as agricultural land and to export the agricultural products via a newly created port in southern Tanzania. Due to the natural conditions, the choice of the port location fell on Mtwara. As a result, a city was designed on the drawing board and residents from the surrounding area settled. The declared goal was a "second Mombasa ".

When the port facilities were completed in 1950, the Groundnut Scheme was already on the verge of bankruptcy, and there was no further use, so the port facilities fell into disrepair and the port basin silted up. The population was originally supposed to be around 200,000, in 1952 it was about 35,000. Due to the peripheral location in Tanzania and the border with Mozambique, which was closed for a long time due to the civil war , development did not get underway for a long time. As of 2012, about 100,000 people live in Mtwara.

In 1972 the Catholic Territorial Abbey of Ndanda was elevated to the status of the Diocese of Mtwara .

It was not until the mid-1990s that there was a slow upturn due to the intensification of trade, the improvement of the coastal road and the establishment of regular ferry services across the Rovuma ; the population increased and the port facilities were repaired. In 2003, the Mkapa Bridge was opened over the Rufiji River , making it easier to connect with Dar es Salaam . Today Mtwara is an important location in the Tanzanian natural gas production sector . A modern gas turbine power plant has existed since around 2009, which is supposed to supply the economically poor southeast in Tanzania with electricity. The "gold rush" around natural gas, potential crude oil and many mineral resources (including uranium) caused the cost of living to skyrocket from around 2010 onwards. Many exploration companies from around the world operate in the Mtwara area.

Infrastructure

One of the Bajajs that can be rented for passenger transportation and was introduced in 2007 as an alternative to taxis

Mtwara is the main transport hub in Southeast Tanzania. There are several daily intercity bus connections to Dar es Salaam via the Coastal Highway, which is currently being expanded. There are also irregular ship connections. The Mtwara Airport west of the city is open daily from Fly540, Air Tanzania and Precision Air served on regular services to jets. The ferry traffic over the Rovuma no longer exists after the sinking of the ferry in July 2008. Since the opening of the unit bridge on May 12, 2010, there has been a direct road connection to the neighboring country for the first time.

For business travelers and the (few) tourists there are several middle-class hotels (according to international standards) available.

Town twinning

A partnership with the English city of Redditch has existed since 1986 .
