The Mkapa Bridge , also Rufiji Bridge , is a road bridge in Tanzania , which leads the coastal road B2 from Dar es Salaam to Mtwara over the Rufiji River, is one of the longest bridges in Africa. The 970 m long girder bridge made of reinforced concrete was inaugurated on August 2, 2003 by the then President of Tanzania, Benjamin Mkapa , and also bears his name. It serves the better development of the agricultural south of Tanzania, which with the bridge and the associated trunk road has a direct connection to the capital, where the agricultural products of the region can be better marketed, but also seems to be the overexploitation of the forests by Chinese companies favor. The $ 30 million structure was funded by the Kuwait Fund , OPEC and Saudi Arabia .

After just six months, parts of the bridge railing were stolen by scrap metal thieves, so the bridge has to be guarded by the police. Four years after its completion, cracks appeared in the structure, which made renovation necessary.
