Nizar Khalfan (born June 21, 1988 in Mtwara ) is a Tanzanian football player .

Club career

Khalfan played from 2005 in his home country in the Mainland Premier League for Mtibwa Sugar . For the club from the city of Turiani , he is said to have scored 16 goals in 57 games by 2007. This was followed by stays in Kuwait at Al Tadamon and the Lebanese Tadamon Sur Club for the winger , before returning to Tanzania for the 2008/09 season and joining Moro United .

In March 2009, Khalfan and his national team mate Nadir Haroub was discovered by the officials of the Canadian club during a friendly game of the national team against the Vancouver Whitecaps and both came to Vancouver in the middle of the 2009 season. While Haroub was unable to assert himself and returned to Tanzania at the end of the season, Khalfan immediately established himself as a regular and reached the 2009 championship final with the Whitecaps , which was lost 3-1 to Montreal Impact . In the following season 2010, the Whitecaps appeared in the transition league USSF Division 2 Professional League , before the 2011 season was accepted into the Major League Soccer .

In February 2011 Khalfan received a contract for the MLS together with the Ghanaian Gershon Koffie from head coach Teitur Þórðarson . Þórðarson praised Khalfan as a fast, tech-savvy, hard-working player with a good shot and a great attitude. Khalfan made his debut in Major League Soccer at the start of the season when he was substituted on at halftime in a 4-2 win over Canadian rivals Toronto FC .

Since 2012 he has been playing in his home country Tanzania again . First for Young Africans FC , then for Mwadui United FC and since 2016 for Singida United FC .

National team

Under the Brazilian Márcio Máximo , Khalfan made his debut in the Tanzanian national team in 2006 . In 2008, the winger played five games for the national team in the second qualifying round for the 2010 World Cup and scored a goal in the 4-1 win over Mauritius , but Tanzania missed the third qualifying round. In 2009 he qualified with the local national team for the African Nations Cup , the semi-finals were missed in the last group game by a goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Khalfan also played in the friendly against record world champions Brazil on June 7, 2010. It is unclear whether he was involved in winning the 2010 CECAFA Cup at the end of 2010 . The Vancouver Whitecaps deleted him at least in September 2010 because of the expected international game commitments for the rest of the season from the squad to make room for another player.
