Gershon Koffie (born August 25, 1991 in Koforidua ) is a Ghanaian soccer player who currently plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer . He mainly plays in defensive midfield.

Career

In 2000, when he was nine years old, Koffie joined Rot-Weiss Accra, a youth football club from Accra , which is also supported by Rot-Weiss Essen . After six years at RW Accra, he joined Inter Allies FC in 2006 , a Ho- based club known for its talent. There Koffie played from 2006 to 2009 in the reserve team of the club in the third division of Ghana. Without having played in a higher class in Ghana, the central midfielder went to Europe in 2009 and played for several months for the Swedish first division club Hammarby IF and then in Denmark for Randers FC , but received no contract.

Koffie was finally discovered by Tom Soehn , sports director of the Canadian club Vancouver Whitecaps , during a scouting trip. On September 3, 2010, Koffie signed a contract with the Whitecaps, who were playing in the USSF Division 2 Professional League at that time and were included in Major League Soccer for the following season . Koffie played two league games by the end of the season and was then also in all four games of the championship play-offs for Vancouver, where he also scored his first competitive goal. In February 2011 he and the Tanzanian Nizar Khalfan received a contract for the MLS from head coach Teitur Þórðarson . Þórðarson particularly emphasized Koffie's ability to capture the ball, his understanding of the game and his physically robust but disciplined style of play.

After Koffie first took part in a training camp for the Ghanaian U-20 national team in July 2010 , he was nominated by junior national coach Orlando Wellington in April 2011 for the 2011 U-20 African Cup . There he came to two missions, but the Ghanaian team missed the semi-finals and the associated qualification for the Junior World Cup in 2011 in Colombia.
