Mitsutani Kunishirō

Mitsutani Kunishirō ( Japanese 満 谷 国 四郎 ; November 10, 1874 in Okayama Prefecture - July 12, 1936 ) was a Japanese painter in the Yōga style .

life and work

Mitsutani went to Tokyo in 1891 and studied painting from the following year under Koyama Shōtarō (1857-1916) in his school "Fudōsha" ( 舎 ). From 1900 to 1901 he stayed in Europe, exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris and received an award. After his return he founded the "Pacific Art Association" ( 太平洋 画 会 , Taiheiyō gakai ) with like-minded people . In 1907 Mitsutani acted as a member of the jury at the first exhibition of the Ministry of Culture and received a first prize in the same year at the trade fair for the promotion of the economy in Tokyo ( 東京 府 勧 業 博 覧 会 , Tōkyō-fu kangyō hakurankai ).

From 1911 to 1914 he went back to Europe and followed the current style of painting there. In 1925 he became a member of the Japanese Academy of Arts . From the end of the Taishō to the beginning of the Shōwa period , Mitsutani visited China four times. During this time his style changed to his own decorative painting. Important works are “Report on the fight” ( 戦 の 話 , Ikusa no hanashi , 1906), “Mourning over transience” ( か り そ め の な や み , Karisome no nayami ; 1907), “House on the sand hill” ( 砂丘 の 家 ), "Red felt" ( 緋 毛氈 , Himōsen ), Mitsutani was involved in furnishing the Meiji memorial gallery with the picture “Visiting the Medical Jikei University” ( 東京 慈 恵 医院 行 啓 , Tōkyō jikei iin gyōkei ).
