Midface fractures are fractures of the skull caused by force on the head. Sports accidents, punches, traffic accidents or falls are often the causes.
One differentiates between one
- Central midface fracture and one
- Lateral midface fracture , which also includes the so-called blow-out fracture .
The symptoms can be diverse, including: hematomas, especially eyeglass or monocle hematomas , visible bony steps, disorders when opening or closing the mouth, swelling and changes in the face. X-rays and CT are mainly used for diagnosis.
The many therapeutic options depend on the type and location of the fracture and the severity of the accompanying injuries.
