The Mixtion (French for mixture) is a special application oil for leaf metals in oil gilding . It is a light, greasy and viscous oil varnish based on linseed oil , black lead (PbO) and turpentine oil .

Gold-plating with Mixtion is possible on different surfaces such as stone, metal, textiles as well as indoors and outdoors. However, since gold plating with Mixtion cannot be polished , it is also referred to as matt gold plating .

After preparing the substrate, the mixture, which can be slightly colored with golden-yellow tube oil paints for better visibility, is evenly applied thinly with a brush (investor) or a lint-free cotton cloth. After a drying time of about three or twelve hours (depending on the mixture used), you can start shooting the gold or metal leaf . The right time to apply can be checked by running a finger over the mixed area. If the application oil is slightly sticky, you will hear a slight whistling sound. If the contact oil has been applied too thickly or if you start shooting too early, the gold can drown (also drown ). In doing so, it becomes too wet with oil and thus unusable.
