Mizuno Toshikata ( Japanese 水 野 年 方 ; original first name: Kumejirō ( 粂 次郎 ); born March 6, 1866 in Tōkyō ; died April 7, 1908 ) was a Japanese woodblock artist and teacher during the Meiji period .

life and work

Toshikata began his training in color woodcut at the age of 14 with Tsukioka Yoshitoshi , from whom he received the first character of his first name. With Watanabe Shōtei ( 渡 辺 省 亭 ; 1852-1918) he studied classical "flowers and birds" painting. He created pictures in the late ukiyoe style of the Meiji period. In addition, he created, mediated by Tsukioka, small-format pictures ( 口 絵 , kuchi-e ) for newspapers and magazines such as Yamato-Shimbun "Bunshō Sekai". He also transcribed prints such as "Buried Tree" ( う も れ 木 , Umoreki ) by Hashiguchi Goyō into a small format that made them suitable for newspapers, Sashi-e (挿 絵 ) called.

During the Sino-Japanese War from 1894 to 1895, Toshikata created a series of triptychs depicting battle scenes. He became a member of the "Japanese Art Association" ( 日本 美術 協会 , Nihon bijutsu kyōkai ), in the "Association of Young Artists" (青年 絵 画 協会 ; His kaiga kyōkai ), was a jury member of the "Nihongakai" ( 日本 画 会 ) in 1898 , belonged to the same year among the supporters of the establishment of Nihon Bijutsuin .

Among his most famous pictures are "Satō Tadanobu comes to the court" ( 佐藤 忠信 参 館 図 , Satō Tadanobu Sankan-zu ) and "Kōtō no Naishi" ( 勾当 内侍 ) and a picture of the nobles Kōtō no Naishi from the time of the Northern and south courtyards in the 14th century. His students include Kaburagi Kiyokata , Hirano Hakuhō (1879–1957), Ikeda Shōen (1883–1921) and others. He died at the age of 43, presumably from overwork. He was buried in the Yanaka Cemetery .
