The Model Holding AG , headquartered in Weinfelden is an international Swiss manufacturer of packaging solutions from corrugated - and solid board . The group of companies has 16 production locations in Europe and in 2017 generated consolidated sales of 915 million Swiss francs with more than 4,100 employees.
history
The family company, which is now run by the fourth generation, was founded in 1882 by Louis Model as a hand-made cardboard factory in Ermatingen . In 1915 the company was expanded to include a cardboard department for processing hand-made cardboard into finished packaging.
After the company's founder died in 1929, Otto Model took over the sole proprietorship and two years later relocated the business to Weinfelden in the former Bühler weaving mill. Under his leadership, the first cylinder mold cardboard machine for the production of cardboard products was put into operation in 1939 and the company went from a craft to an industrial company. When Otto Model died in 1940 when a frozen industrial sewer was blown free, his widow Elsa Model continued the company under the Otto Model & Co. company . In 1953 the manufacture of corrugated cardboard and its processing into packaging was started.
With Otto Model jun. In 1961 the third generation took over the operational management of the company. He became Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1974 and handed over management to his younger brother Peter L. Model. In 1975 Model got into waste recycling and founded the two subsidiaries Recufibra AG and Poly Recycling AG for this purpose . These were sold in 1999 as part of the concentration on the core business of packaging.
Model Holding AG was founded in 1982 as the parent company of the Model Group. As a result, the company grew through several takeovers both domestically and abroad. In 1995, Martin U. Model and Daniel Model, the fourth generation of the Model family, acquired the majority of the Model Holding. Elisabeth Model joined them eleven years later. The overall operational management was taken over by Daniel Model. During this time, it was decided to concentrate on the core business of corrugated board and paper, with the consequence of divesting the plastics recycling division. The expansion of the core activities was driven, among other things, by various takeovers and the opening of subsidiaries, particularly in Eastern Europe.
Weinfelden paper mill
With a patented and secret vacuum system, the paper mill can tear open the casing of beverage cartons and reuse the valuable long paper fibers for the production of corrugated cardboard. The plant, called “Fiber Evolution”, has a capacity of 75,000 tons per year. More than enough to recycle all of Switzerland's beverage cartons.
