Model (engineering)

In engineering , a model is understood to be the replica of a technical product on a reduced scale, but not necessarily with the same geometric details as the large version, but with the same dimensionless key figures .

Example: a thin sheet metal strip can serve as a model of a steel pipe that is laid in deep water and sags, which is given additional hydrodynamic mass with Plexiglas pipe pieces and additional weight with lead weights without distorting the flexural rigidity. Test models are used to carry out measurements on them and to convert the results into the large-scale version, which is why the appearance of the models is irrelevant.

Models are used, for example, in wind tunnels and shipbuilding research institutes .
