Modeneser (domestic pigeon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Modeneser are one of the oldest breeds of domestic pigeons and come in most of the colors. They were originally bred as flying pigeons in Italy, especially in the city of Modena .

Flying pigeon sport

The flying pigeon sport, which was operated with Modeneser, was described by Pliny over 2000 years ago. In competitions the pigeons were released by all breeders at the same time. They were kept in flight with the help of flags. If the breeders pulled them in, the pigeons landed and the breeders tried to lure strange pigeons into their loft. The specimens caught in this way were returned to their owner for a ransom.

The mode of flight of the Modeneser never corresponded to that of the porpoise pigeons and over the years the type of the flying pigeons changed so much that today they are real exhibition pigeons that are counted among the chicken pigeons .

Modern races

The first Modenese came to Germany towards the end of the 18th century. Others were exported to England. The populations in Italy, Germany / Austria and England / America developed in different directions over time. Today, therefore, three races are distinguished:

Colors

Modeneser are the breed pigeons with the most colors. Bonizzi described 152 colors in his work Colombi Domestici e la Colombicultura in 1953 . According to Schütte , however, the Modeneser were available in more than 200 colors. Some of them were forgotten. They are divided into three types of drawing: Gazzi, Schietti and Magnani.

  • Gazzi are white with a colored head, bib, wings, wings and tail.
  • Schietti are monochrome or have drawn wing shields.
  • Magnani are three-colored, multi-colored or almond colored.
