Modern sword art is a sport recognized by the Bavarian State Sports Association, organized in the Association for Modern Sword Art in Bavaria e. V. (VMSB, since 2002).

The sport combines the philosophy and tradition of Asian martial arts with techniques mainly from medieval European martial arts. Supra-regional championships in modern swordsmanship have also been held since 2014.

history

In order to be able to use public training halls and to be insured at the same time as with a regular sports business, a community of interests founded Modern Sword Art as a sport for non-profit sports clubs in 2002 . The guidelines of the Bavarian Ministry of Culture , which comment on the requirements of the Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV), included on the one hand that all groups training in sports clubs had to come together in an umbrella organization, on the other hand they had to be accountable for the content of the Type of sport, their coaching education and their number of members.

As the then existing only in Bavaria sports clubs, the modern swordsmanship should offer then, a hierarchically superior governing body of the association was created for modern swordsmanship in Bavaria (VMSB) to life. Thus was modern swordsmanship officially recognized as a sport in Bavaria and could be supported by the state.

As modern swordsmanship today those special ways of dealing designate by the European sword that regard following the guidelines of the VMSB education, sport and sporting competitions.
