Module (cognitive science)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the cognitive and neurosciences, a module is a functional unit that is independent of the neural organization.

In the human brain, for example, there are modules for language, for mathematical reasoning, for psychological empathy and many other cognitive functions. The brain areas that are active do not have to be spatially delimited neuronal units. Rather, different regions are usually active in all of these functions. The term module therefore describes more the abstract unit. In recent years, however, the term “cognitive domain” has become increasingly popular.
