Mohammed Fahmi ( Arabic محمد فهمي, DMG Muḥammad Fahmī ; * around 1950) is a Lebanese former major general and politician. He has been Minister of the Interior in the Diab cabinet since January 2020 .

Live and act

Fahmi was born to a Shiite Lebanese mother from the influential Zein family and an Egyptian father, was naturalized as Lebanese and joined the Lebanese army in 1978. He was close to the then chief of the Lebanese Army General Émile Lahoud (1989-1998) and Jamil Al near Sayyed, who was the second in command of the army's intelligence service at the time. The latter played an important role in his appointment as Interior Minister in January 2020. Fahmi is widely regarded as a courageous military man and a supporter of state institutions. He held various positions in the Lebanese army: the head of the bombing detachment unit, the commander in chief of the military region of Lebanon and the security department of the military intelligence service. Fahmi studied at James Madison University in the USA. He has good relations with the Syrian government and Hezbollah, although he is not a member of that party.

Fahmi is a retired military man; he was most recently major general in the Lebanese armed forces under President Émile Lahoud, who was in office from 1998 to 2007. As a member of the Sunni population , named by Hassan Diab , he has been Lebanon's Interior Minister since January 21, 2020.

There was criticism of his appointment; there have been allegations that the security adviser to the Syrian regime chief Bashar al-Assad had urged Fahmi to be placed in this position, but he was officially appointed by Diab to dispel Western reservations. He has also been criticized in the past for his role at Blom Bank as security advisor to the board of directors.

Interior Minister Mohammed Fahmi announced two days after the explosion in the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020 that he was planning to resign if the names of those responsible for the mega port explosion in Beirut were not disclosed at the end of the five-day investigation period, reported the daily newspaper al-Joumhouria . The Lebanese ambassador to Jordan, Tracy Chamoun, and MP Marwan Hamadeh had previously resigned.
