The Mokronowski Palace (also called Jakub Fontana House , Polish Pałac Mokronowskich or Kamienica Jakuba Fontany ) is a late Baroque tenement house built in 1771 on ulica Zakroczymska 2 (corner of ulica Kościelna 12 ) in Warsaw's New Town in the inner city district . The Neustadtmarkt, the Hotel Le Regina, housed in the former Mostowski Palace, and the Sapieha Palace are in the immediate vicinity . The building is listed.

history

The building was erected in 1770/71 according to a design by Giacomo Fontana at his expense. It was one of the first buildings of the time to be constructed with structural elements. Fontana himself did not live in the house, but rented it out. As a real estate investor / landlord, Fontana was one of the first businessmen of its kind in Warsaw. In the 19th century the tenement house was renovated. Originally existing arcades were walled up by Friedrich Albert Lessel and a central projection was built. During the Second World War , the building was badly damaged during the Warsaw Uprising ; only walls and part of the facade remained. In 1953 the reconstruction took place. Today the building houses apartments as well as the Warsaw Music Society “ Stanisław Moniuszko (Polish: Warszawskie Towarzystwo Muzyczne im. Stanisława Moniuszki ) founded in 1871 with its library, which contains valuable originals of Polish operas and pieces of music from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The originally three-story building now has 5 floors; the outer shape was based on the architectural templates of Francois de Neufforge.

The widespread name of the building as the Mokronowski Palace is probably a misunderstanding. The residence of the Mokronowski family, which no longer exists today (no property of this family on the Fontana house is known), was located very close to the Fontana building.
