Momentum (organization)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Momentum , also known as People's Momentum , is a British political organization that seeks to lobby the Labor Party to support Jeremy Corbyn and his political positions .

Jon Lansman, a left-wing Labor activist and former associate of Tony Benn , founded the organization Momentum in October 2015. It was the successor to the successful support campaign for the election of Corbyn as party leader, from which it was able to take over the data of the members. It was initially open to all supporters of Corbyn, even if they were not members of the Labor Party. The founders stated that their goal was to support grassroots initiatives such as initiative kindergartens or tenants' associations and to network them in order to win new supporters and voters for Jeremy Corbyn. The selection of candidates within the party should also be influenced. One focus of the organization is on work in social media . A left-wing intellectual network is to be set up under the name “People's PPE ” and several conferences have been organized. In February 2016, paid membership was decided and members of parties other than Labor were denied entry. In February 2017, the organization adopted a new statute. After that, new members also have to join the Labor Party; the existing members should do this by July 2017. Suspended Labor members may remain in Momentum, and those who have been expelled from the Labor Party have the right to a hearing. The organization is run by a National Coordinating Group made up of members from all over the UK, Labor officials and representatives from other Labor support groups. A member's council of 50 members, which is to represent the membership base, is determined by lot every six months.

The organization reported over 20,000 members in May 2017, organized into 150 local groups.

Critics accuse Momentum of intent on mainly voting out Corbyn opponents and of being Trotskyist infiltrations. Momentum speakers reject this with a view to their grassroots democratic orientation and their young age.
