The course was first offered at the University of Oxford in 1920 . Since the turn of the millennium, similar courses have spread outside the UK.

History and dissemination

The course was first introduced in the 1920s at Balliol College, Oxford University under the title Modern Greats . This was supposed to replace the course of the Greats , as the study of Classical Antiquity at Oxford was called, as it no longer seemed up to date for the requirements of modern politics.

Well-known Oxford PPE graduates include senior UK politicians and officials including:

The course at Oxford thus fulfills a social function similar to that of the École nationale d'administration in France. Other well-known graduates of the course include the philosopher Isaiah Berlin and Bill Clinton , who did not complete the course.

In the 1980s, a PPE course was also introduced at other English universities, notably the University of Warwick and the University of York . Meanwhile, courses with the same subject combination are offered at different universities around the world.
