Monem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Monem is in the terminology of the French linguist André Martinet for the smallest meaningful unit; it therefore corresponds to what, according to established linguistic terminology according to Eugene Nida, is called a morpheme .

According to Martinet, monemes fall into two classes: lexemes and morphemes. The term lexeme can still be used synonymously for the class of free morphemes , while the term grammem for the class of bound morphemes is less common.
