The MoneyMuseum is a private museum in Zurich that deals critically with the history of money and the future of money. The sponsor is the non-profit Sunflower Foundation.

history

The MoneyMuseum was founded in 1999 by the financial analyst Jürg Conzett. He transferred his private collection to the Sunflower Foundation, which was newly established for this purpose. With the website www.moneymuseum.com it went online in the same year as the first numismatic museum worldwide. In October 2000, the MoneyMuseum founded a branch in the Swiss National Museum . In 2002 it opened a permanent exhibition in the museum on Bärengasse . The exhibition “The people of Zurich and their money” also took place there, in which the focus was not on coins, but on the way in which people use money. In February 2003, the MoneyMuseum moved into its own premises on 500 square meters at Hadlaubstrasse 106. Since then, special exhibitions and events have been taking place there alongside a permanent exhibition.

Priority work

The MoneyMuseum sees itself as a communication platform, the aim of which is to "make the historical, economic and social background of the individual objects clear to the visitor and thus make him think about his own way of dealing with money".

MoneyMuseum on the Internet

The MoneyMuseum offers materials free of charge on the Internet. The offer ranges from historical monetary history to reflections on modern economic systems and the philosophy of money. A new focus of the MoneyMuseum since 2016 has been the topic of "crisis".
