Monocistronic mRNA

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In genetics, monocistronic is an mRNA that encodes a single cistron that corresponds to a gene. These mRNAs therefore only contain one open reading frame . In contrast to the monocistronic eukaryotic mRNAs, the predominantly polygenic (polycistronic) mRNAs of the prokaryotes are encoded by several different genes. In some viruses , translation of their entire genome results in a monocistronic polyprotein .
