history

Monteforno was founded in 1946. In 1971 Monteforno had 1750 employees, making it the largest industrial company in the canton of Ticino. Work was carried out in three shifts. In 1977, Monteforno was taken over by the Von Roll company, which progressively cut jobs. In 1994 Von Roll decided to cease operations at Monteforno amid massive protests from the workforce and representatives of the region . The trade unions sought to sell Monteforno by Von Roll in order to continue the plant with a new owner and save the last 340 jobs. Von Roll did not offer a hand and the plant was closed on January 31, 1995. One year before Monteforno closed, the Tre Valli region had by far the highest unemployment rate in Switzerland at 9 percent. Ten years after the closure, Von Roll sold the properties in Bodio.
