Montepio is the oldest cooperative bank in Portugal .
It was founded on October 4, 1840 in Lisbon as Montepio dos Empregados Públicos ( Pension Fund for Public Employees) by a handful of civil servants. The association felt the need to invest its members' savings profitably. Since January 1844 the company has been called Montepio Geral , at the same time the Caixa Económica de Lisboa was affiliated with Montepio.
In 2008 the company had a network of 327 branches in Portugal.
