Monumento al Divino Salvador del Mundo is a monument and the national symbol and landmark of the country of El Salvador .

location

The national symbol is located in the center of the capital at Plaza Salvador del Mundo (formerly Plaza las Américas ) in San Salvador .

history

The monument to Jesus Christ , the Savior of the World , was designed by the architect and artist José María Barahona Villaseñor . The approximately 18 meter high statue consists of the figure of Christ, the patron saint of the country, who stands on a globe and is attached to a base.

The statue first adorned the grave of President Manuel Enrique Araujo, who was assassinated during his tenure in 1913 . In 1942 the Araujo family donated the statue to the Archbishop of San Salvador. Archbishop Luis Chávez y González inaugurated the monument in its current central square on November 26, 1942, on the occasion of the first national Eucharistic Congress.

The statue fell to the ground in the 1986 earthquake and was badly damaged. It was rebuilt and put back in its place months after the Levantemos el alma salvadoreña campaign . On this occasion, the Plaza las Américas was also renamed Plaza Salvador del Mundo.

In 2010 the entire monument complex including the surrounding central square was rebuilt. The statue has been renovated and given a new protective coating. The work began on June 7, 2010 and ended on November 18 of that year. This project was carried out by Grupo Roble on behalf of the city administration.

The national monument is also the starting point for the annual parades.
