MoonEdit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MoonEdit is a program that enables collaborative writing . It can be used under the Linux , Windows and FreeBSD operating systems . Moon-Edit was originally called Multi-Editoro and was written by Tom Dobrowolski .

MoonEdit is free for non-commercial use, but it is not currently free software or open source .

The user of MoonEdit can first connect to a server, then open a text page and edit it like in a conventional word processing program . Depending on the number of participants in a session, several insertion points are displayed in the text field. A column on the right shows all users connected to the page. Text entered and changes to the cursor positions are visible to all participants in real time. Each participant can make changes to any part of the text at any time.

User mapping

The maximum number of users for an editing session in MoonEdit is currently 14. When opening a page, the user selects a pastel color from a palette of 14 colors. This color then forms the background for all text that he enters, as well as for his user name in the column on the right. This enables each text section to be clearly assigned.

Page history

There is no need to save written text in MoonEdit. MoonEdit records the process of editing a page. Every input - including typing errors - is saved immediately. With F7 the user can call up a progress bar at the top of the page, the right end of which he can drag with the mouse from the far left (initial, empty page) to the far right (current status of processing) - similar to many programs for playing digital Video files. The keys F6 and F8 make it possible to go backwards or forwards in the page history step by step, so that the complete input sequence of a MoonEdit page can be retraced in detail.

Incorporation of a MoonEdit page into a wiki

The "ting-wiki" uses the Mediawiki software. An extension is installed there, by means of which a MoonEdit page can be inserted into a wiki page (article) in a readable way. By entering the command svsavetxt, the user saves the page text from MoonEdit on a plain-text (pure text) HTML page, which is integrated into the wiki page with the extension. The background colors are lost during this process.

Sound function

If you press a key in MoonEdit, all connected participants hear the sound of typing a typewriter key. In this way, one becomes aware of edits that are outside the visible editing window. The sound function is currently only available in the program version for Windows .

MoonEdit server

Active MoonEdit servers are:

  • sphere.pl - server of the program author
  • surrep.titio.us
